Amazon to launch ‘Amazon Coins’ virtual currency for Kindle Fire owners

Amazon is gearing up to launch its own virtual currency that Kindle Fire owners can use to buy apps and games for their Kindle device. Officially called Amazon Coins, this virtual currency is slated to launch this May and provide another way for Kindle Fire owners to pay for their applications and games.

According to Amazon, this new virtual currency will greatly help developers by offering up “another substantial opportunity to drive traffic, downloads and increase monetization even further” for their apps and games. These new coins can also be used for in-app purchases as well.

So how will you be able to get Amazon Coins to spend? Well actually no one knows just yet except Amazon as they haven’t released those details just yet. However, when Amazon Coins launches in May, Amazon plans to give away “tens of millions of dollars” worth of Coins to help kick things off.

If you’re a developer interested in taking part in Amazon Coins and want to be involved in the launch, you have until April 25th, 2013 to submit your app to the Amazon AppStore in order to be involved. We can only assume that currently available applications and games on the Amazon AppStore are automatically going to be a part of Amazon Coins.
