RuneScape MMO could be on tablets by the end of 2013

We’ve been talking about Jagex and their MMORPG RuneScape coming to tablets for awhile now. We first heard about the possibility that this could happen back in the Fall of last year. Now Jagex has come out to say that the company is working really hard on trying to have RuneScape available on tablets by the end of this year.

Porting a full browser-based MMORPG into a version suitable for tablet is a lot of work so it is no surprise that it has taken this long already. The game itself has been around for a long time, originally released back in 2001 and as of recently has seen a bit of a surge in popularity again. RuneScape recently got overhauled and recoded into HTML5 making it much more friendly for both browsers and mobile devices but an actual mobile client is what is being worked on.

We’re working really, really hard to do tablets by Q4 this year. I see smartphones as a window into the game, so I think even mobile is right for RuneScape, but it’s probably as a subset or augmentation of the game rather than the core game experience. – Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard

So while tablets will be getting the full meal deal when it comes to having RuneScape on them, smartphone are more than likely to have more of a companion style application for the game available instead. It makes sense to go this route as tablets have much more screen real estate than a smartphone does.

As for SmartTVs getting in on the action like we previously reported on, there is no further word on that right now but considering the game is now in HTML5, you should already be able to play the game on those.
