Build and share your own content in cross-platform open source games with XML Games

A new Kickstarter project is aiming to make games basically never-ending by offering up a simple way for players to build and share user created content. While level editors are nothing news when it comes to gaming, there isn’t a whole lot of mobile games that come with that feature and when they do it can sometimes be not the easiest thing to do.

When it becomes a little tedious to make content through a level editor in a game that offers up that feature, it isn’t something that you really want to work at after awhile. XML Games has an idea where users can build and share levels within supported games. This feature isn’t new but the ability to do it cross-platform is and XML Games is aiming to accomplish this by creating sets of XML tags that plays can use to easily create new content.

Since this isn’t using a specific language for a specific platform and is instead using a language that is supported across multiple platforms, this means you can play other people’s content even if you’re on an Android device and they are on an iOS device. Once you build a level using the XML Tags and the company’s web-based platform, you’ll be able to share and download user created levels online and cross-platform.

There are already three games in the works using this idea: Tilting Maze, Crazy Racer and Trench Runner. XML Games has hit up Kickstarter for a little funding to get everything off the ground. Since the company is created by a couple of students, and the overall concept isn’t that complicated in theory, they are only looking for £2,000 in funding. Currently there is 22 days to go before their campaign ends and they do have a list of stretch goals should they exceed what they are hoping to get in funding.

Android devices will be the first platform to start getting games that support this type of user content creation with other platforms following shortly after.

Thanks to Steve N. for the heads up!
