Dungeon Defenders II won’t be a MOBA after all, will go back to tower defense gameplay

Back when it was announced that Trendy Entertainment was making a sequel to their hit tower defense style game Dungeon Defenders, everyone seemed pretty excited about a lot of the changes that would be arriving with this sequel. One of the big changes was that it would be a lot more like a MOBA style game than an action-based tower defense game like the original was.

Even though this change would have made Dungeon Defenders II very different from the original and possibly a lot more fun, fans of the series reacted to the MOBA style changes with mixed reactions. Some were all for it and others were not. Taking those mixed reactions and comparing it to how everyone pretty much loved the first game and Trendy Entertainment came to the conclusion that they should stick to the action-based tower defense gameplay the original title had.

Originally it was being developed as a MOBA-style PVP game, but we reviewed the project and decided to turn the ship, refocusing our efforts on a true sequel. I’m happy to announce today that Dungeon Defenders II is in development!

I believe that as players, we want to share memorable gaming experiences with our friends. We want to share our ideas and insights with the developers who make the games we love and have our voices heard. As Studio Director, I am working to enable ways for you to share and get involved. Our approach to this reboot of Dungeon Defenders II keeps that principle close to the heart, and we intend to provide even more methods for you to help us mold Dungeon Defenders into a game that will resonate in these very ways. We will be announcing the first initiative toward that goal later this month. Hint: it’s around an important date. – Trendy Studio Director Dave Loyd

While this return to their tower defense roots with this sequel may make some of the people looking forward to the MOBA-style gameplay the sequel was promising, it should make the majority of fan happy that the game will be staying more true to what it originally was and what made it so damn popular in the first place.

As for the date Dave is talking about in his statement regarding the turnaround in the team’s focus on the game, it could be in reference to when the console and PC version of the original game was released which was on October 19th, 2011. If that is the case then we have four days to wait before we find out a bunch of new details regarding the new Dungeon Defenders II game.
