EA’s CEO says Dungeon Keeper’s microtransactions were a shame

EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson has decided to come out and state what pretty much the entire mobile gaming world already knows, and we even stated it back when the game first came out, that the company’s Dungeon Keeper game’s microtransactions were ‘a shame’. He further went on to say that the company ‘misjudged the economy’ and while that may sound like an odd statement, it sounds like it was more in reference to how the game was priced rather than no one could afford it and the game sucked.

Where you are dealing with IP that has existed in the past, even though you’re reinventing it for a new audience, you have to do your best to stay true to its essence. When you’re thinking about any business model, premium, subscription, free-to-play, value has to exist. Whether it’s a dollar, $10, $100 or $1000, you have to deliver value, and always err on the side of delivering more value, not less. – EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson

Overall it is a pretty interesting bit of information for the CEO of EA to come out and say. We can’t say we blame him for feeling that way either. Dungeon Keeper could have been one of those really big hits for the company but due to the IAPs involved, many people were turned away from the game almost immediately.
