In Case You Missed It: Pelé: King of Football – Number 10 Scores Again

Phenomenally gifted is one way to describe Edson Arantes do Nascimento, also known as Pelé. After watching fifteen minutes of a documentary covering his dribbling, passing and scoring skills, I was amazed. Football’s (soccer) most well renowned player has arrived in the Play Store. Pelé: King of Football is the first game from mobile application design and development group Cosi Productions, based in New York. If you have enjoyed games like Flick Soccer! by Full Fat Games, you will definitely want to download this game. It is enjoyable and has plenty to offer.

At DroidGamers our goal is to cover as much gaming news as possible for the Android community. Over the past year or so we have seen a dramatic increase in the amount of quality games being released. Sometimes, in the flurry of reporting, some pretty good games get missed or they don’t receive the hype as some of the games produced by larger studios. Welcome to ‘In Case You Missed It’, a section for reviews for some pretty good games we think you should still check out even if they didn’t just arrive in the Play Store.

Unlike most flick type of games, the perspective on this one is a little different. As opposed to just swiping a screen with a ball on it, you actually swipe from the direction of the player’s foot, head   or hands toward the path to the goal, since you are playing from a third person perspective.  It is small details like this that bring more realism to the game. Since you are playing from this perspective, you have the opportunity to customize your player from the start of the game.

Pelé: King of Football Features:

– Over 800 goals and challenges to complete from the backstreets to the big leagues.
– Customize your player with unique uniforms, hats, hair styles, and more!
– Use special power-ups to defy physics and take down any opponent in your path.
– Fun, intuitive touch controls mimic soccer kicks.
– Unlock exclusive footage of the legend himself.
– New head to head multiplayer mode.
– Test your skills against other players around the world in hourly online competitions and leaderboards.
– Win real world prizes – from signed soccer balls and jerseys to meeting the legend himself!

Who doesn’t enjoy the opportunity to create an in-game likeness? The character customization is extensive. You have the ability to pick jersey colors, cleats, add your name, number, hats, etc.  Once you have created your player, you start off playing in the sandlot with dreams of grandeur. Pelé as a child was known to kick a rolled-up sock stuffed with rags around the streets of his hometown Baru. No socks to kick here, but the first stage of four have twenty challenges for you to complete in each. You are awarded crowns for completing the match, making shots and by getting a target high score. Completing the challenges unlock the other stages in the game which include Junior, National and World stages. There is also a Beach stage that says it is coming soon. There are tons of challenges to complete.

The graphics and animation in the game are well done. The first time I hit a defender in the head with a soccer ball he fell to his knees. I wasn’t expecting that. The music and in game atmosphere is festive as I would imagine a World Cup game to be. Pelé was involved with the creation of this game and lends his voice to encourage you when you don’t meet your goals.  When you progress in the game, videos are unlocked from the Video Vault. They cover videos of the advancement of Pelé in his beloved sport. In addition, the game also offers different tickets which can be used to win real prizes. Multiplayer is also available if you think you are skilled enough to challenge others. Take a look at the leader boards before you do.

Though the game is free to play, the game play does not seem to be hampered by that fact like many other games that use the same model. The only downside to the game is that you must have a wireless connection to play the game. Pelé: King of Football is definitely worth the download. It has been on my device since it was released and it will stay there as my go to game to enjoy quick bursts of fun. Pelé played in Brazil and was part of a team that won three world cups. During his career he scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 games. It is fitting that the King of Football finally comes to Android.
