The Samsung Gear VR game Darknet will launch for free

The Samsung Gear VR headset seems to be really picking up steam these days and one of the more anticipated games for it is called Darknet by indie developer E McNeill. His game recently won the Best Gameplay at the Proto Awards and it is turning out to be one of the bigger titles to launch for the Samsung Gear VR headset.

The interesting thing about this is that this full premium game will be launching with a price tag of free… at least when it first launches that is. The Samsung Gear VR uses the Oculus Rift store for its titles and that particular storefront (when it launches) doesn’t include any ways to monetize the game’s that are on it. So when Darknet is released, which is planned for around the same time everything else hits store shelves, he will be giving it up for free until there are option to monetize it. At that point Darknet will have a$10 price tag.

Essentially, I’m making a risky game for a risky platform with a risky launch strategy. I don’t think it’s completely insane. Darknet is designed to be one of the deeper, more hardcore launch titles for Gear VR. If it’s also one of the only full premium games available, I think it could really stand out. Of course, in the long term, this strategy only works if the game is actually good, but I have faith! – E McNeill

His cyberpunk game Darknet is going to be one of the only titles that is a full premium game that is developed for more hardcore gamers. It will feature deep gameplay that players won’t be able to complete in an hour or two. When the Samsung Gear VR headset is released, along with the Oculus Rift store, most of the games available will be demos because developers are waiting for the monetization options to be implemented which will happen after the store’s launch.

E McNeill has decided that he will just release the full game instead of a demo since he doesn’t want to penalize early adopters of the headset. Anyone who snags a headset before the store is updated with ways for developers to sell premium games will benefit from having at least one full-sized game to play right away.
