Rovio Launches Retry, a Nod to Flappy Bird

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Dong Nguyen of .GEARS Studios must be feeling awfully delighted. Rovio, the studio behind the smash-hit Angry Birds franchise, has released a new game called Retry, which bears a number of similarities to Nguyen’s uber-popular Flappy Bird.

Retry offers familiar mechanics to those who have played Flappy Bird or one of its many derivatives that continue to proliferate in the Play Store. Players control a tiny monoplane that they must guide through a series of obstacles which increase in difficulty as the player progresses through the game.

Rather than wholly emulate the gameplay of Flappy Bird, Retry introduces certain mechanics that make it a far more forgiving experience than Nguyen’s rage inducing title. As implied by the game’s title, Retry allows the player to retry after a failure. Additionally, where as Flappy Bird largely follows the conventions of the Endless Running genre, Retry focuses on unlockable worlds, providing the player with a more definable goal than simply attempting to best one’s distance record.

Retry crashed into the Play Store on October 21st and as such, is currently available for as a free title with IAP. Head to the Play Store now to download a copy and see for yourself if Retry flies high or stalls in mid-air.
