Interesting news coming out of northern Japan today as an official ‘No Video Games Day’ has been started in order to curb video game playing in the Hokkaido Prefecture. So far this “No Video Games Day’ is only for the Hokkaido Prefecture and isn’t a nation-wide event although it could certainly turn into one.
So why the hell are we reporting on this? Well when they say no video games, they literally mean no video games and that includes mobile games on your Android phone or tablet. The whole reason for this is due to test scores of students being down in this area of Japan when compared to the rest of the country. This could be due to a large number of reasons but apparently the PTA and the Hokkaido Board of Education want to blame video games for the decline in test scores.
Unfortunately for gamers out there is the Hokkaido Prefecture, this isn’t just a single day a year. Instead it is actually two days each month – the first and third Sunday every month starting this February 2015. On these official ‘No Video Games’ days, children will be encouraged to hang out with their friends and family but obviously not by playing video games.
