Club Nintendo will be replaced with… something… with this new DeNA / Nintendo partnership

Earlier this morning Nintendo and DeNA announced a partnership where the two companies would be working together to bring Nintendo IPs to mobile gamers. These will be coming in the form of completely new games that will be based off of currently existing IPs like Super Mario Bros. on their other platforms. Part of that announcement also was about a new multi-membership service that will be built.

This new multi-membership service will be replacing the currently existing Club Nintendo service. This new service, which doesn’t have an official name right now, will “encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service”. In other words Nintendo will be running this new milti-platform members service. One thing to note here, Ninentdo basically just admitted to currently having a new console that they are developing right now, denoted as the NX. That, however, has nothing to do with Android.

Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service. Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned. – Satoru Iwata Director and President of Nintendo

What exactly this new service will offer users remains to be seen but we can speculate that, aside from some of the features currently available with Club Nintendo, there will be cloud saves for games that appear on multiple platforms in the future and other similar utilities. At least that it what we hope to see. The new service will be implemented in the upcoming mobile games Nintendo releases. The new platform that Iwata references isn’t just this new service but the new console NX that is being worked on.

We will be keeping an eye on the development of this new service and will post updates as we find out more about it in the coming month.
