Square Enix randomly releases a new RPG onto Android called Masters of the Masks

Square Enix has released a new RPG onto mobile devices today called Masters of the Masks. This release was rather random considering they didn’t announce that this was coming, or that they were even making an RPG like this. All their news as of late has focused on their main franchises like Final Fantasy. Of course we are not complaining.

So what is Masters of the Masks? Well this game is a turn-based RPG with a bit of a different visual style than you may be used to when it comes to a Square Enix title. Usually their RPG releases feature retro-style graphics, 3D remastered visuals, or just straight up 3D rendering. This game features a bit more of a hand-drawn cel-shaded look to it with a bit of a comic flare.

As for the storyline, here is what you can expect:

In the realm of Ivren, the gods help the peoples of the land with sacred Masks. A band of chosen, masked warriors now embarks on a harrowing quest to rid Ivren of a mysterious evil rising in the east.

Player’s spells and skills are based off of the current mask they are wearing. In order to get new or stronger abilities, players can either find or craft new masks to equip their party members with. This is all in the quest to rid your land of evil which has appeared and started causing all sorts of problems for everyone.

Masters of the Masks Features:

– Epic turn based battles that use an intuitive drag and drop interface
– Cell-shaded art style new and unique in mobile RPG gaming
– Deep skill system that is easy to pick up, yet challenging to master
– A colorful cast and a high fantasy world with a deep, layered mythology

This is definitely a bit of a different kind of release for Square Enix, and it is a bit refreshing to see. It is something new and not something based off of all their current franchises. Masters of the Masks is available to download for free off of Google Play and does contain optional IAPs as well. One thing you do need to know is that this game does require an internet connection to play. In other words, there is no offline gameplay.
