Gameloft lays off employees and shuts down their New York office

Interesting news today regarding Gameloft who, up until now, seemed to be doing quite good in regards to making money with their mobile games. Apparently it isn’t as good as originally thought, unless there is some other reason for laying off employees and shutting an entire office space in New York.

News of the layoffs and the New York office closing came from various now ex-employees of Gameloft informing Gamasutra about the situation. A Facebook post from lead programmer Kevin Chen confirmed everything this morning as he announced his sudden lack of employment with Gameloft.

As of this morning, after 15 years and many dozens of bestselling games, all production at Gameloft NYC is ceased. All development personnel, including myself, have been terminated. – Kevin Chen

As of right now there is no confirmation as to exactly how many people have lost their obs this morning, but current figures are pointing at the possibility that it is over 100. This is all part of the company’s New York office shutting their doors for good. Gameloft wouldn’t confirm how many people were laid off, why the layoffs happened, or if Gameloft plans to do anything else in New York. All they did say was a general statement about the situation.

Gameloft is actively managing its production organization and is refocusing on its most efficient and experienced creation centers in order to adapt to rapidly changing market conditions and to grow its revenues faster and more profitably. – Gameloft

However Gameloft won’t expand further than the above comment. Hopefully we find out the reason for the layoffs and possible future plans. In the meantime, we wish everyone affected by these layoffs the best of luck finding new employment. If you or someone you know are affected by these layoffs, feel free to contact us ( via email ) to tell us what’s going on confidentially.
