Games Workshop and Pixel Toys team up and announce Warhammer 40K: Freeblade for Android

Games Workshop has teamed up with developers Pixel Toys to make a new Warhammer 40K game for mobile devices. Officially called Warhammer 40K: Freeblade, this will be a very different type of Warhammer 40K than we have seen for mobile devices so far.

When it comes to Warhammer 40K games, we usually see either a side-scrolling arcade type of game or a strategy style of title. However, in the case of Warhammer 40K: Freeblade, this game is a straight-up action title with an almost head-to-head style of combat. This will come complete with big mechs, lots of weaponry, and plenty of action judging from what we can see in the trailer. As the developers describe it, Warhammer 40K: Freeblade is like “Paanzer Dragoon meets Walker in the Warhammer 40k universe“.

Players will assume control of an Imperial Knight, which is a giant armored mech with massive heavy weaponry. Apparently this will also be the first time players have been given the chance to control one of these mech in any Warhammer 40K game on any platform. The game plays out in a third-person perspective and there will be over 40 missions to work your way through when the game launches. Some of these include dynamically-created Patrol missions.

On top of that, the environment is pretty much full destructible as well. When not trying to complete missions, players will be able to go into the crafting system to make new gear for their mech. This includes making new gear or upgrading existing parts of your Imperial Knight. The combat system in this game is developed around a tap-to-shoot style of control: single-tap, double-tap and multi-tap gestures. It sounds like this may be on-rails, at least during the combat part. This could be a good thing since the combat seems a little complex, which isn’t a bad thing either.

For those of you interested in this game, Warhammer 40K: Freeblade will be landing on Android (phones and tablets) sometime in the Autumn. In the meantime, you can check out some of the gameplay action in the new announcement trailer below. There are any more screenshots below for you to check out.
