Popular PC game The Battle of Sol arrives onto Nvidia Shield Android TV today

It would be nice to think we might one day, as a species, end up smart enough to properly look after our planet and our fellow men. Unfortunately The Battle of Sol’s bleak peek into mankind’s future is probably a more likely outcome. Still, we will get to fly spaceships and shoot at stuff so, you know, every cloud.

The deal with The Battle of Sol is that by 2050 Earth has become uninhabitable. In fact it’s a massive toxic dustbin, which forces humanity to leave the planet and establish settlements elsewhere in the Solar system. Phew, that’s a relief. Unfortunately the human race soon discovers that our Sun is dying far earlier than we imagined so in response we form a single United Colonies of Sol and look to find a home in deeper space. Our attempts to do so, however, are in danger of being thwarted by the mysterious enemy faction The Children of Dawn.

On those grandiose foundations is built a game which takes the player on a ride around our solar system and beyond. Spanning 21 levels the game throws you into a variety of perilous situations. Fast-paced dogfights against hordes of enemy fighters is commonplace. But you’ll also engage in battles between huge Capital Ships, destroy a giant oil refinery, storm a space station… You’ll even get to put in a bit of sightseeing as you visit familiar objects in our solar system: Saturn, the Kuiper Belt, Neptune, Triton, Pluto and less familiar celestial bodies way beyond.

Shield Android TV gamers are in for a particular treat. The Shield version is pretty much directly on par with the PC version when it comes to the game’s Unreal Engine made visuals, it’s fully featured and has been polished and tuned specifically for the Shield platform.

The Battle of Sol Features:

– Gorgeous visuals powered by the Unreal Engine.
– Dogfight hordes of enemy fighters and participate in epic capital ship battles
– A hybrid Newtonian and accessible flight physics model
– 21 campaign missions
– Earn medals based on mission performance
– Fully voice acted by top name VO talent

Most remarkable, perhaps, is the game’s personal battle for it’s own continued existence. Originally released in 2012 as Sol: Exodus, it represented a return to the much neglected space exploration and combat genre. Sadly the original developers had to shut up shop and it looked like curtain. Fortunately the passionate core team behind the original game were not ready to let their baby go so in a labor of love they rebuilt it, new and improved, pretty much from the ground up into the epic tale it is now.

For those of you who have been waiting for this game to get released onto Android, you can now download The Battle of Sol from Google Play for $9.99. As of right now, it is only available for the Nvidia Shield Android TV. No word yet on whether it will come to other devices.
