Qualcomm is selling off it mobile augmented reality arm called Vuforia for $65 million

Qualcomm has announced that they are selling off their augmented reality business called Vuforia for a cool $65 million. Unfortunately, if you were planning to head to the bank right now to withdraw $65 million to purchase Vuforia, it has already been purchased by PTC.

Vuforia is the company behind one of the earlier toolsets for augmented reality game development, called Vuforia SDK, that developers could use to create their AR games. It launched for Android back in 2010 and when it arrived, developers could snag the SDK for free. It can also be used with Unity3D, so there was a lot of versatility available when combining the two.

If you’re a game developer who uses Vuforia SDK, it won’t be shutting down with the sale, so no worries on that part. PTC has promised to keep supporting the platform, developing it further as well. However, it is interesting to see Qualcomm selling it, especially with AR and VR growing so much this year alone.
