Unique Gamer IDs are coming to Google Play Games

This just in from the Android Official Blog, the Android team has announced a couple of new features today. First, the biggest part of the announcement: the Android team announced that they will be rolling out Gamer IDs over the next few weeks. This allows players to be able to customize their public facing gaming persona, and as achievements are racked up or leaderboards are climbed, that Gamer ID is what other people will see.

Existing, as well as new users to Google Play Games, need only to sign into a new game that supports Google Play Games in order to be prompted to create the ID. NEW is the keyword there for existing users, and the FIRST supported game will work for new Google Play Games users. From there, players can then toggle whether the ID will be public or private, and whether it’ll be linked with your email or you name.

In other news, the Android team has apparently been working on streamlining the login process for Google Play Games, which now only requires a single log in for the account, as opposed to logging in on a per-game basis. I have already attempted unsuccessfully to sign-in and grab my ID, so clearly the team isn’t kidding about it “starting to rolling out”. Hopefully this feature will get enabled sooner, rather than later.
