Contra is a classic arcade side-scrolling shooter from the early console/arcade days that was known for being on the rather challenging side of things when talking about its difficulty level. Since the original game’s release, there have been a few add-ons to the franchise, all of which being challenging in their own right and keeping that difficulty level tradition alive.
Now it looks like mobile gamers will be getting their own Contra game, appropriately named Contra Mobile, and it’ll be a team effort from Konami and Tencent. While there isn’t a lot of details right now about what all will come with Contra Mobile, the trailer that just came out does give us some idea of what we can expect. Visually, Konami is not going with a retro look, but instead is bringing more modern graphics to this mobile Contra game, which is a very good decision in my books. There’s nothing wrong with the original Contra game at all, or any of the retro titles in the franchise, but there’s also something to be said about modernizing a classic. And it looks good too.
As for the gameplay, Contra Mobile looks to keep with the tradition of a Contra game being quite challenging as well as keeping with the fast-paced style of gameplay the series is known for. So if you’re experienced with Contra games, this will make you happy to know. If you’re not experienced with them, you’ll be dying a lot initially.
Right now there is no word on whether or not this will see the light of day globally, although it should be a safe bet regarding a global release. It wouldn’t make much sense not releasing this in Europe and North America. Then again weirder things have happened. Price-wise, Contra Mobile will be free to download and is expected to have IAPs as well, which hopefully doesn’t make this game a bit of a letdown. We will have to wait and see exactly what the IAPs end up being.
When we know more, we will post an update. In the meantime, you can enjoy the new trailer in the video above.
