Micro-Sized Hack ‘N Slash Obelisk Appears on Google Play

Indie game developer Team Terrible has ported their Ludum Dare 37 entry, Obelisk, to Android devices.  With the Ludum Dare challenge of making a game around the theme of “One Room,” Team Terrible gives us the story of a warrior pulled through time to a place with the titular Obelisk.

In this free to play port, a mysterious and sentient Obelisk pulls you into its realm to defend it from incoming mobs of fighters from other ages.  Players are somehow linked to the Obelisk itself and their health is displayed by the glowing runes etched into its stone face, and must slay your foes armed with only a sword and a hookshot.  The sword to cut down opponents, while the hookshot can be used either to grapple enemies or to help players reposition and move themselves around.  The controls for this pixelated hack ‘n slash are a virtual d-pad and two buttons, keeping it as simple and effective as the games its descended from.

As with most Ludum Dare games, the experience is brief.  Many of the games in the challenges are made so quickly they can’t be given the depth they might deserve, or longer play times, but the good ones tend to make up for it with really fun gameplay compressed into a small package, which is what Team Terrible has done with Obelisk.
