Best Android RPGs 2018 – Top Western, JRPGs, SRPGs, and action RPGs on mobile

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition Android RPGs

Need to fill a really long plane journey or dig into something meaty on an upcoming holiday? Sounds like you need a good old RPG.

These are typically massive games that feature a wealth of content that can keep you busy for upwards of 50 – 100 hours at a time.

Fortunately for you, Android has an absolute ton of these experiences. What’s more, we’re going to list the best of them below just for you.

Best western RPGs: Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment

If it’s a western RPG you’re after, look no further than the Infinity Engine games. These classics launched during the late 90s and early noughties and were kings of the genre.

Our selection includes Baldur’s Gate, its sequel, and spin-offs Siege of Dragonspear and Icewind Dale. Oh, and if you fancy something with a little more writing than action, grab Planescape: Torment.

Best Japanese RPGs: Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest

JRPG lovers are absolutely spoiled on mobile, with pretty much every classic entry in the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest franchises available.

Both are well worth playing, so just pick one and have an amazing time.

Final Fantasy
Dragon Quest

Best strategy RPGs: The Banner Saga and Final Fantasy Tactics

Strategy RPGs are also rife on mobile, but our personal favourites are The Banner Saga and Final Fantasy Tactics franchises.

Pick Banner Saga if you’re more into western RPGs and Final Fantasy Tactics if Japanese is more your persuasion.

Best action RPGs: Eternium, Wayward Souls, and The Bard’s Tale

Eternium is our personal favourite action RPG on mobile, as it feels like it was built from the ground up with a touchscreen in mind. You won’t simply tap buttons to unleash skills – you’ll cast them like spells by drawing symbols with your finger.

Wayward Souls is a classic isometric RPG that bundles in the challenge of a roguelike. You’ll help a variety of characters battle their way through dungeons.

Meanwhile, The Bard’s Tale is a stone cold classic with a focus on humour, summoning heroes, and rescuing princesses.

Best sci-fi RPGs: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Galaxy of Pen & Paper

More into sci-fi than fantasy? There’s no shame in that! There’s no shortage in excellent RPGs in this category either, with our personal favourites being Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Galaxy of Pen & Paper.

Pick the former if you want a focus on action and the latter if you want more strategy. Pick either for an excellent game.

Best dungeon crawler RPGs: The Quest, QuestLord, and The Deep Paths

More into classics like Might and Magic or Eye of the Beholder? Then we have an excellent collection of first person RPGs for you to play through.

The Deep Paths is the looker, and the most modern of the bunch. It’s more reminiscent of recent entries like Legend of Grimrock, which sadly isn’t available on Android yet.

QuestLord is the exact opposite, with pixel visuals that will whisk you back 20 years. It’s well-suited to the smaller screen though.

Then there’s The Quest, a hand-drawn RPG series that sees very regular standalone expansions. It’s an Android darling, and one of our favourite games on the platform.
