Octopath Traveler is coming to mobile in Japan

Octopath Traveler Android

Square Enix has announced Octopath Traveler for mobile, though it will only launch in Japan initially. It’s also not a direct port, instead posing as a prequel to the Switch adventure.

Its full title is Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent according to Forbes, and all characters from the original will return alongside new characters.

Octopath Traveler on mobile will serve as a prequel to the Switch release

An exciting new feature is the ability to bring eight characters into battle with you. That’s a first for a genre that’s not really changed much in the last two decades.

Before you go worrying about this being some pay to win Gacha, it isn’t. Well, at least that’s not what Square Enix is promising. It’s free to play but it’s more of a single player game like the Switch version.

Apparently, the franchise isn’t done with Switch yet either. Another game is planned for the system, but it will take some time. The mobile version is designed to tide us over until then.

You can pre-register for the game right now on the official Japanese site, with a beta period beginning on March 12. We’ll let you know as soon as we learn more about a potential western release.
