Square Enix Streams Gameplay Footage from Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier

Square Enix has revealed some new gameplay footage of its upcoming battle royale Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier in action on Twitch. You can watch it here.

Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier is shaping up to be a polished and slightly unusual battle royale shooter, not least because it’ll feature monsters from the Final Fantasy universe. These beasts will roam the maps, randomly attacking competitors.

Melee combat will also be an unusually prominent part of the Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier experience, along with the more traditional ranged combat that characterises most battle royale games. The advantage of melee attacks, of course, is that they’re silent.

Materia will also feature in the game. First introduced to the series in Final Fantasy VII, Materia is the stuff that lets you characters grow stronger and acquire new abilities. In The First Soldier it’ll do pretty much the same, enhancing your magical abilities and making you tougher.

We don’t have a release date yet, but you can sign up for the Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier regional closed beta here. It’ll take place between the 1st and the 7th of June.
