We don’t throw accolades around here very often, but if you asked us what our favorite game of the past couple of years was, we’d have to say Slay the Spire. It’s a game that you just have to keep playing, battling your way to death after death after death.
Even now, with countless hours put into several different versions of the game, we’re discovering new secrets, new ways to play, new decks to build to try and finally conquer the spire.
The game is a deck-building roguelike where you pick a character and fight against monsters as you ascend the titular structure. There’s a story, revealed in little snatches, that’s intriguing enough to keep you playing. And playing.
Whether it’s a dramatic victory against a deadly boss or a tragic defeat against annoying smaller enemies, every time you play there’s something new, something different, something to learn.
Slay the Spire is a game that demands your attention, that pushes you to try new things and experiment with new builds. It is, quite frankly, one of the best games ever made. And while this mobile version might be a little fiddly, it’s still utterly wonderful.
