Oblivion On Your Phone Is Possible With Exagear

If you’re a fan of RPGs, and haven’t been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of The Elder Scrolls series. Whilst The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the most recent, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion dominated the fantasy game landscape for years. Between its large world, fascinating story, and NPCs that are prone to turn to violent crime in the streets, it’s quite an experience. Up until recently, this experience was restricted to PC and consoles. Thanks to the Exagear Windows Emulator, that may no longer be the case.

Cyrodiil On The Small Screen

Exagear is a virtual machine that can run Windows applications on android phones and chromebooks. In a reddit post, an emulation enthusiast demonstrated using the app to run Oblivion on a Samsung S10 Plus. It’s possible to see them getting into combat, looting a fallen enemy, wandering around the map, and checking through their inventory. Even better, it was running at a perfectly serviceable 25-30fps throughout.

Framerate is often the bottleneck that prevents larger games from being playable on mobile platforms. As specs get better and emulation applications continue to improve, there will only be more games reaching a comfortably playable framerate. Next stop Skyrim!

Exagear: Powerful, If Slightly Limited Currently

Developed by Eltechs, Exagear is available to download as an APK and is usable on any ARM android device. It’s worth keeping in mind that there are still a few major limitations. It’s currently unable to support any x86 devices, and can only support x86 Windows PC 32-bit applications. This does leave plenty of options, and updates are frequent so this may change in the future.
It’s an exciting time to be following the emulation community. Don’t be surprised to see bigger and bigger titles showing up on little screens in the near future.
