Sometimes it’s best to keep things simple. This week’s selection of new Android games skews fairly casual, with a deliberately undemanding spin on Boggle, a game about deflecting light with mirrors, and a game about tapping cats.
There are some more involved experiences, however, such as the eagerly anticipated Warhammer: Odyssey, albeit in softlaunch form – and fairly bug-ridden softlaunch form at that.
SinTales, meanwhile, just looks odd.
Inked
Interestingly, this is the second hand-drawn game we’ve covered in two weeks. This time we’re looking at Inked, an isometric puzzler with visuals based on ballpoint pen drawings. It won awards prior to release, snagging Game Connect Asia’s 2020 Indie Developement Grant Award, and it looks swell.
Warhammer: Odyssey
We don’t always think of a game being out when it’s merely in softlaunch, but this softlaunch is different. Warhammer: Odyssey is available pretty much everywhere, meaning you can download and play it for free right now. The only problem is, you’ll have to deal with bugs and glitches if the initial user reviews are anything to go by.
Wordsmyth
Wordsmyth is a Boggle-esque word-game with a small but meaningful twist: there’s no timer. This means you can dip in and out all day, slowly excavating the 3×3 grid of letters until you’re satisfied that you can’t go any deeper. It’s pretty, too, with a range of meditative, unassuming backdrops to accompany your word-foraging.
SinTales
“Why did Little Red Hood lose herself and kill friends because of jealousy?” It’s a good question, and not one we can hope to answer in this short paragraph. You’ll just have to play SinTales, a new fairytale-based RPG from T-T-Play. And while you’re at it you can find out “What kind of betrayal made Dorothy completely sacrifice her original self?” Sounds bonkers.
Lyxo
Lyxo has one of the simplest premises going. All you have to do is deflect light towards a target using a series of reflective surfaces. Somehow, developer Emoak has managed to wring 87 increasingly difficult levels out of this concept. The result is a novel, stylish puzzler.
Abysswalker
The prospect of a cyberpunk RPG seemed a lot more appealing before CD Project’s hugely anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 launched with a catalogue of glitches and flaws, but you shouldn’t let that put you off Abysswalker, a visually impressive, neon-soaked, post-apocalyptic RPG from 9SplayDeveloper.
Greedy Cats: Kitty Clicker
Greedy Cats is an unimaginative but absolutely bombproof gaming concept. Brought to you by casual supremo PikPok, it’s a colorful, self-aware clicker in which you tap the screen to make a variety of cute cats stuff their faces. The more you tap, the more fans you add to your kitty’s audience, in turn spurring them on to eat more. It can’t miss.
