Tidepool Games has dropped a new fast-paced pixel art ‘snakelike’ roguelike on Android. It’s called MageTrain and if you’ve ever played Nimble Quest, this one will remind you of it. In fact, the new game draws heavy inspiration from Nimble Quest.
What’s MageTrain Like?
MageTrain is a mixture of Snake, auto-battlers and roguelikes. You control a line of heroes that follow behind you in a line. Yep, just like a snake. Each hero attacks on their own as you zip around an arena.
Your job is to manage who goes where and avoid crashing into enemies or obstacles. You oversee who leads the pack and who backs up the squad since their abilities change depending on where they are in the train.
MageTrain has nine heroes available at launch and one of them throws birds. They all come with different skills depending on whether they’re leading or just part of the group.
You move through eight different dungeons, fight 28 enemy types and get 30 skills to build up your team. You also collect gold and power-ups along the way.
Each run is different too, due to its roguelike structure. You follow branching paths, pick upgrades, and try to survive for as long as possible.
It’s similar to the structure in Slay the Spire or FTL. There are no fixed levels and no saving your progress to pick up later. If you mess up either by bumping into the wrong thing or getting overwhelmed by enemies, you start over.
On that note, catch a glimpse of MageTrain below.
It Isn’t Slow-Paced
What keeps the game fun is how much you improve with each run, even when you lose. You start understanding when to play it safe, when to go full offense and when to just survive for another 30 seconds.
MageTrain is now available on Android and it’s free to play. So, check it out on the Google Play Store.
