The Owl is a new terror within the forest, stalking the skies and covering ground much quicker than the deer. This 99 Nights in the Forest Owl guide tells you how to encounter this foe and utilise it for your camp’s benefit.

99 Nights in the Forest Owl Behaviour
The owl awakens around night 4, as seen through a cutscene where it plucks a wolf from the ground using its large talons.
If you’re out in the new snow area past nightfall, you may encounter it. To reach this area, upgrade your camp to level three, craft a map using three logs, and head towards the location marked with a beanie icon.
When you spot the Owl, freeze. Each time you move, you’ll notice an eye icon filling with red. This shows its temperament, as the Owl won’t approach the player unless they move too much. If you trigger the Owl, it will close in faster than the deer, but also cower and stop chasing temporarily if you flash a light on it.
If the Owl closes in, it takes roughly two slashes to kill an unarmed player. Attacking the Owl will not kill or deter it.
Owl Feathers – Birdwatcher NPC
If you flash the Owl with your torch, it may drop feathers. These can be taken and exchanged with the Birdwatcher Vendor NPC, who has a small wooden shack near the camp base. Each time you give the Birdwatcher a feather, she will give you fuel.
Behind her, you’ll see a Research meter, which fills gradually with each new Feather given. When full, the NPC will give you the giant barrel of oil next to her stall.
