It’s April Fools, and Dead Rails devs haven’t reigned it in. The update is pretty stable. Maybe it will get a colt following. We’re going to talk about it until we’re horse… okay okay. This is our Dead Rails Horsing Around game mode guide. There may be more horse puns.

Dead Rails Horsing Around Guide
Let’s go.
The Horsing Around Game Mode
Horsing Around is a new game mode here as part of the April Fools update. This plays out mostly like an average game of Dead Rails in Normal Mode, with a few crucial changes.
- All players will play as the Horse class. Horses move much faster than the average player. They’re not as fast as the vampire, but they lack that class’ debuff.
- There is no train, forcing you into completing a Pony Express run. You’ll need to progress without the train.
- Completing a Horsing Around run will award you with the Horse Class to use in regular runs.
Horsing Around Tips
A lot of the aspects of a Horsing Around run are similar to doing a Pony Express challenge run. We’ve covered this in our Dead Rails Pony Express guide, but let’s run over some tips on how to complete this unusual variation on a typical run.
- Horse Armor. Surprisingly, horses can wear armor. It might look a little awkward, but you can fit some armor on your horsey form, and you might need it.
- Horse Guns. Despite having hooves instead of hands, you can still pull a trigger. Deploy firearms just like you would normally.
- Ignore fuel. Bodies and coal are largely useless, as you’re relying on your own horsepower. Only pick up stuff you can sell for more items.
- Lightning Storms can be a problem. Without shelter you’re a bit exposed to lightning. You may get lucky, but the only way to make sure you don’t get bolted straight to horse heaven.
