The towns of Dead Rails look like an instant NOPE situation. They’re on fire, and packed with zombies. Inside though, you can find the kind of loot that can turn a run around. So, what’s important to know about towns, and how should you deal with them? That’s what our Dead Rails town guide covers.

Finding A Town
Towns appear at regular intervals along your route. You should see at least one town between every fort your visit. They resemble a large collection of buildings, usually with a railway platform. They are filled with zombies, with a large horde usually advancing toward the train as it passes.
Special Town Buildings
There are some buildings that only normally appear in towns. These are often the main reason to raid a town, so let’s go over each of them and what they have to offer.
Banks
These are pink-red colored buildings, and one of the best sources of loot. In order to break into the vault, you need to drop a zombie in a top hat, you should find him near the bank. He’ll drop a code you can use to open the vault. Inside the fault you can find gold, silver, and bonds which you can trade in for starting gear in the lobby.
Churches
These tall white buildings are easy to spot. Inside you can find holy water, which is a throwable weapon that does great damage, and crucifixes, which are a one use instant kill item, perfect for when you’re in a tight spot.
Town Raiding Tips
Here are a few things we’ve found in our own, sometimes lethal, experience running town raids that might help you in your own attempts.
- Be careful where you leave the train. If you train isn’t well defended, it could get overrun. If you have a horse, you can ride it from the train to the town, and this can be useful if you want to avoid your train getting overrun.
- Plan your approach. You don’t need to take out every single zombie in a town. Rather than dashing right into the center, take routes in from the outside toward the building you want to raid. This should let you take out only the zombies around the building, rather than aggro the whole horde.
- Be selective with loot. There’s usually more stuff than you can carry, and unless you’re clearing the whole town, loading the train will be tricky. Hit the important buildings like the bank and the church first, then see how much storage you have left.
- The rifle’s ability to one-shot zombies makes it great for dealing with towns, just make sure you have plenty of ammo.
