The deeper you travel, the stranger the terrain becomes. This Subterra Layers guide peels back each new habitat under the surface, including its Blocks, Mobs, Coordinates, and if it has a Portal!

Subterra Layers Guide
Finding a new layer is a huge achievement in Subterra, and the further down you travel, the rarer the items found and harder the enemies. This natural progression prevents newer players from flooding to the deeper levels and scalping rare ore to level up quickly.
To reach lower layers, you need to fully kit out with a tough Pickaxe, bigger backpack, Weapon, and some Ability Cards wouldn’t go a miss…
Dirt Layer
In this humble layer, players get to grips with the game mechanics and their purpose. As expected, the blocks mined here include Dirt, Mossy Dirt, Stone, Coal, Copper, and Tin. As this area hugs the surface, it has no Portal.
Towards the lowest part of the Dirt Layer, players begin to encounter Slimes and Zombies. Both enemies are relatively easy to destroy given their attacks focus on chasing and landing short-ranged hits on the player.
At Y-35, the Dirt Layer ends and players enter the…
Stone Layer
Transitioning into the Stone Layer which begins at layer Y-35, players here will find some new materials alongside those they’ve encountered already. This includes:
- Dirt
- Stone
- Coal
- Copper
- Tin
- Iron
- Silver
- Gold
- Gem Geodes
- Amethyst
- Sapphire
- Emerald
- Citrine
- Topaz
- Ruby
- Platinum
- Diamond
- Roots
- Vines
- Stalactite
This layer, similar to the Dirt Layer, has no teleportation Portal since it isn’t too far from the top. Alongside encountering Slimes and Zombies, players will now also be hunted by Bomb Skeletons. These creeper-like mobs ignite bombs when in the player’s range, nuking themselves and hoping to destroy the player with a powerful explosion in one hit.
It takes a lot of travelling downwards to reach the next layer which is the…
Darkstone Layer
Beginning at Y-435, the Darkstone Layer is plenty dark. It’s home to a ton of strange and strong materials needed for upgrades or selling. Given how far down it plummets, the Darkstone Layer does have a Portal which rests at X-26 and Y-481.
In this layer, players will find:
- Stone
- Darkstone
- Gold
- Black Ice
- Cobalt Ore
- Sunstone
- Platinum
- Chromium
- Azurite
- Moonstone
- Titanium
- Wolframite
- Nocturnite
- Diamond
Unlike the previous layer which introduced a new mob alongside some familiar, the Darkstone Layer is only home to the Zombie and Darkstone Skeleton. The Darkstone Skeleton is a thicker, more brute enemy which attacks the player at close-range.
Permafrost Layer
Finally, you’ve made it to the bottom of the world! I bet you feel on top of the world for this achievement. Wait…
The Permafrost Layer begins at Y-723, has no Portal, and offers similar to the previous Layer. However, this vibrant layer has some unique offerings to keen adventurers brave enough to reach the base.
- Stone
- Platinum
- Chromium
- Moonstone
- Colder Ice
- Black Ice
- Ice Block
- Diamond
- Sunstone
- Gold
- Titanium
- Cobalt
- Wolframite
- Azurite
- Nocturnite
The ladders down end at around Y-1,366. Anywhere sandwiched between its beginning and end coordinate, the player may encounter Zombies and Darkstone Skeletons.
