Guinness World Records releases Gamer’s Edition app onto Android. Win a hard copy for yourself here!

Guinness World Records has embraced the gaming sphere a lot more over the past few years including even coming out with a Gamer’s Edition of the Guinness Book of World Records. Today they announced a new application for Android based around the Gamer’s Edition of World Records called the Gamer’s Edition Arcade.

This is a dedicated gaming application which features challenges for gamers to compete in. people who complete the challenges and have the best overall scores will also be included in the 2012 Gamer’s Edition of the Guinness Book of World Records which means these challenges won’t be easy. There are 5 challenges in total which are inspired by classic arcade games. You’ll need to make use of all the different types on controls as well including swipe, tap and accelerometer.

To win you’ll need to get the highest score on one of the following challenges:

•        Monkey Country: The gorillas have gone crazy!  Take out as many primates as you can in one minute
•        Mental Gears: Engage fingers and brain to pick a series of locks, opening as many as possible in 60 seconds
•        Chest Of Destruction: It’s bomb disposal against the clock! Cut the correct wires before they blow
•        Hoover’s Hot-Air Escape: Race your balloon up a treacherous canyon, avoiding the overhanging cliffs
•        Rupee Roulette: Tilt the treasure chest to swipe the rupees before the clock hits zero
•        Adventure Mode: Is the ultimate challenge, with Thomas Braider, a famed archaeologist, guiding gamers on a full-on record-breaking romp through all five challenges.

Should you succeed, you will have a spot in the 2012 Guinesse Book of World Records Gamer’s Edition as these will all be official Guinness world records. Scores are shared through Game Center (iOS), OpenFeint, Facebook ans you’ll be competing with other players on local and global leaderboards. You have until Sept 1st, 2011 to get the high score in one or more of these challenges.

As of the time we are writing this, the Android application isn’t yet showing up on the Android Market but it is slated to launch today so keep your eyes peeled for it. We will update this article with a link to the Android Market once it becomes available. Official press release below.

14 April 2011 (London, UK): Guinness World Records today announces the launch of its new Gamer’s Edition Arcade app available on iPad, iPhone, iPod and Android from today for 59p at the iTunes Store.

Gamer’s Edition Arcade is the first-ever dedicated gaming app from Guinness World Records and complements the recently released best-selling title, Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition. The app features five exciting challenges which give users the opportunity to earn their place in the record books, alongside sample content from the Gamer’s Edition book.

The app’s five official record challenges are inspired by classic videogames and make full use of interactive features including touch, swipe, vibrate and accelerator.  Every game offers the chance to set an official Guinness World Records title.  Achieve the highest score on:

Somebody is guaranteed a place in Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2012 when the world’s best for each challenge is announced on 1st September 2011.

A free, lite version app also launches today giving gamers the chance to test their skills in one select game, compete for a new Guinness World Records title and sample content from Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition. The Gamer’s Arcade app has been created by Plow Digital.
