Blizzard Entertainment has dropped the details for the next major Hearthstone expansion with Cataclysm. Marking the first large content drop of the Year of the Scarab, the expansion brings darker themes and large-scale disruption. The expansion launches on March 17th, 2026.

Let’s talk about the storyline first

It follows directly from the end of Across the Timeways. Murozond shattered the Hourglass of time and unleashed a catastrophic threat into the current timeline. It’s not a familiar version of Deathwing, but one who successfully completed his Cataclysm, creating a full-blown world-ending scenario that now looms over Azeroth.

The Cataclysm expansion in Hearthstone builds on the popular Colossal mechanic. It also introduces two new keywords called Herald and Shatter. Also, it adds class-specific legendary spells representing defining moments from the Heroes of Time.

Herald is a Colossal-focused feature. Six classes will have access to this mechanic, along with the new legendary Deathwing hero card. Each time you Herald, the Colossal minions and Deathwing receive upgrades.

There are tons of new in-game and out-of-game events apart from Cataclysm in Hearthstone!

The devs call it a Dragon’s Hoard of rewards available to all players. You recruit the Dragonflights and push back against Deathwing’s forces, while Chromie travels across timelines to gather allies from previous expansions.

Once Chromie returns, every card from Into the Emerald Dream and The Lost City of Un’Goro, including Golden cards, will become available to all players starting March 10th. These cards are trial cards and will remain unlocked for use throughout the entire expansion cycle.

As Cataclysm approaches the Hearthstone Tavern, Blizzard is also partnering with various creators to showcase new cards ahead of release. These previews will highlight the Herald and Shatter keywords, Deathwing himself, and the expanded use of Colossal minions.
