Hidden Gem: apzOrb – A new take on the classic game of Snake

While not being a huge fan of Snake inspired games, there are a couple out there that are really enjoyable to play such as Mini Army by OrangePixel and now this little hidden gem called apzOrb. Built using Unity3D, apzOrb is actually a refreshing take on the classic game Snake.

Just like in any Snake-style game your goal is to consume a certain item, in this case similar colored blocks, using your Snake. While your ‘snake’ in this game doesn’t really grow, you do have to eat only similar colored blocks. If you eat ones that are not similar to the color your ‘snake’ is currently at you will get a strike against you. Four strikes, you’re dead and it’s game over. However, if you just want to see how good you are ate eating similar colored blocks you can always do the Time Challenge which has you eat as many similar colored blocks as you can before time runs out.

Graphically, apzOrb has a slight bit of Tron in it with the neon lines outlining the blocks you have to eat. The soundtrack in the game matches that feeling of futuristic gameplay as well. However, the graphics can also make the game look and feel as though you are playing a retro game which is always nice.

When controlling your snake, all you have to do is drag your finger around your screen. While this is great and all, sometimes it can be a little hard to see where you are going or what you’re eating. Everything is dynamic in the game which means the blocks can change color and you could end up eating something that isn’t similar in color to your snake. It would be great to have an option for a virtual joysick of some kind.

apzOrb is a neat take on Snake and although you could sit and play it for long periods of time, this is best served as a game to kill short periods of time with. It does it effectively as well. On the Atrix we were playing this on we did get a couple of force close errors but restarting the game seemed to clear those up. This is the developers first game on the Android Market and is available in two flavors like most games do: a free trial to test it out and a full version which costs $2.25. You can also play the game online on your PC if you have the Unity Player installed.
