Hidden Gem: Cube of Atlantis puzzle game – Unique, frustrating and fun

Released almost a month ago, Cube of Atlantis by Danger Monkeys is a great puzzle game that can get incredibly challenging, frustrating (in a good way) and fun. In this game, you’ll be solving the puzzle of the Cube of Atlantis during each level of gameplay.

The cube itself is fully interactive and 3D which means you can spin it, touch it, fondle it and whatever else you’ll need to do with it in order to solve the puzzle during each level. The game starts of easy enough for the first few levels, giving you some sort of fake sense of accomplishment before it drive home the point that, yes, it was just messing with you the first few rounds.

Features:

  • Fully interactive 3D cube – touch it, spin it, lick it. Whatever it takes to solve it
  • Original sound effects
  • 20 Levels progressing from easy to way-too-hard (many more levels in Full Version)
  • Multiple user support: let your friends play with their own username so they don’t mess up your progress
  • Helpful Hints: enable this to see hints when you get stuck. Disable hints if you are a puzzle purist

After the first few levels you will be introduced to the levels map where you can select your path to take. Each level brings a new puzzle for you to solve using the cube and there are different effects for each level that you’ll have to deal with. A prime example is the Nebula level which, as you tap your way to solving the puzzle, the screen gets darker until it’s pitch black leaving you blind and hoping you press the right spot. Each level also keeps track of your time so you can see how fast you are at solving these puzzles.

You know a puzzle is challenging when a developer has to include this sort of disclaimer in the description:

When you encounter a seemingly impossible level and experience frustration, remember you’re accessing the Cube through an expensive phone. No puzzle will require you to throw it against a wall! THE CREATORS OF CUBE OF ATLANTIS CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED TO YOUR PHONE/DEVICE OUT OF FRUSTRATION.

Graphically, Danger Monkeys did a really good job rendering the cube in-game. The animation for spinning the cube is nice and smooth and the spots on the cubes light up with a nice glow effect to them. The map is also rather nice and has areas labeled off which helps you  follow the storyline of the game.

Currently Cubes of Atlantis is in a free trail version only right now with a full version slated to be released soon. Even though this is a lite trial version, you are treated to 20 levels that progress from easy to incredibly hard and lucky you, there are plenty more levels on the way when the full version is released. If you like unique puzzle games that actually challenge you then you’ll want to check this one out and enjoy playing it while waiting for the full version to arrive.

Tip: Pay attention to the titles of each stage. They usually will be related to what you have to do to solve the puzzle.
