Proving that sometimes even the best sites sometimes miss under the radar games, Xenowar was recently released to the masses in the Android Market. For those of you who remember the true X-Com (and not that FPS title currently in development) you are in for a real treat.
Xenowar has it all, the tactical combat, the planetary view, and the tense feeling you get when your troops are out gunned and out numbered. While the game is a work in progress, and could use some work in the interface and graphical departments, from what I’ve seen it’s a solid foundation on which a truly great strategy game could be built. Similar to X-Com, Xenowars pits Terran soldiers vs. aliens in tactical combat. You can set a variety of locations, the relative strengths of the teams, time of day, and other variables that affect the battle.

Please note, you will need a middle to high end device to run this game, as the game uses OpenGL for graphics. While there is no free android version (currently priced at $1.99), there is a handy Windows version freely available on the developers site which can give you a taste of the Xenowar experience. This is truly a hidden gem, especially for those of you who are fans of X-Con and even though it’s a work in progress still, the potential is definitely there.
