Monday Afternoon Humor: Police Commissioner blames video games for knife attacks

It seems after a bit of a dry spell we have something to finally talk about in our Humor series of articles and this time we can thank a Police Commissioner over in Australia for bestowing upon us his wisdom regarding video games and the fact he is blaming them for the increase in knife attacks he has apparently seen.

Speaking with the Telegraph Australia, New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione dropped some wisdom on the world when stating that video games are to blame for the increase in knife attacks recently.

How can it not affect you if you’re a young adolescent growing up in an era where to be violent is almost praiseworthy, where you engage in virtual crime on a daily basis and many of these young people (do) for hours and hours on end. You get rewarded for killing people, raping women, stealing money from prostitutes, driving cars crashing and killing people. – New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione

While it seems that this Police Commissioner is basically describing the Grand Theft Auto series and a few others, apparently this applies to all video games with a drop of violence to them. He goes one to add a bit more of his wisdom for us to enjoy:

That’s not going to affect the vast majority, but it’s only got to affect one or two and what have you got? You’ve got some potentially really disturbed young person out there who’s got access to weapons like knives or is good with the fist, can go out there and almost live that life now in the streets of modern Australia. That’s concerning.

Even though it has been pretty much proven that violent games really does not increase the crime rate and, in fact, violent crime rates have dropped since games have become so popular. I suppose because one person goes off the deep end that all video games should be banned, even if it has a speck of violence in them. We could throw all the arguments out there such as games have age ratings, parents should be responsible and all that good stuff but there really is no point in doing so. There will always be one person out there who will say this stuff anyways.

My prediction, soon mobile gaming will be responsible for the apparent rise in drive-by shootings (see what I did there?). Feel free to vent, laugh, cry and generally just shake your head at this in the comments below.
