Open Drive is a racing game for mobile that’s truly more than just a game, and it’s is now out in early access on Android. It’s built by SpecialEffect, a charity org that helps physically disabled players access video games. They’ve co-developed the game with Sun & Moon Studios.
What’s the Game About?
The game is built to adapt and let you play your way. You can use touch, keyboard and mouse, switch access, or a controller. It’s designed to be inclusive from the ground up.
Players who rely on alternative input methods like eye gaze can also enjoy the open-world driving game on mobile. Yep, the most exciting features is the mobile-specific eye control. You get a compatible eye gaze camera which you can steer just by looking left or right.
It’s a massive win for accessibility, especially for players with physical challenges who often can’t play games that only support touch or gamepad input. The feature works across all four of the game’s open worlds Stunt, Speed, Snow, and Meadow.
Gameplay is super flexible. You can chill and drive around collecting orbs. Or chase high scores and pulling off crazy jumps using the Roadster, Trickster, or Speedster. Also, you can tweak the speed as you like. Take a look at the early access announcement trailers of Open Drive below.
Open Drive Is Now Out in Early Access
The game auto-detects whatever control method you’re using and adjusts accordingly. Switch Access on Android is fully supported.
Each input method in Open Drive has its own setup. For touch controls, you get ‘Precise’ and ‘Classic’ modes that let you steer by tapping or controlling the car directionally with a few taps.
Similarly, there are different setups for Switch Access, mouse, keyboard and Android-compatible gamepad/controllers.
Open Drive is up in early access on Android, though the eye control functionality doesn’t seem to be fully in yet. Once the full version drops later this summer, you’ll be able to try it out for free. Right now, you can check it out on the Google Play Store if it sounds interesting to you.
