School Hero is a new beat ‘em up on Android by Gkoros Polychronis, an indie developer. On the surface, it looks like a vibrant strip from a comic book. On the inside, it’s more of a fun game that serves its purpose which is entertaining you.

So, What Is School Hero?

The game lets you play as ‘Hero.’ Yeah, that’s literally the name of the protagonist, a schoolboy with fists of fury and a heart of gold. The story has a classic save-the-girl plot. So, you are the new kid in school who is fighting some shady group that kidnaps your girlfriend.

As you level up through punches, kicks and the occasional dramatic cutscene, you uncover some dark conspiracies lurking in the school hallways. Gameplay-wise, it’s a good beat ‘em up. You can grab enemies, throw them or pick up random weapons lying around.

The boss battles are such that you have to learn attack patterns and find openings, which gives that classic beat ‘em up thrill. The team captain boss is a definite highlight.

School Hero also offers a bunch of fun extras. For instance, you can unlock pets to help in battle. There’s also a shop for grabbing 1-ups, XP boosts, and health, so you’re never too far from a comeback.

There Are Different Modes Too

There’s a story mode for when you want the drama, an arcade mode for the nostalgic chaos and a survival mode when you just want see how long you can keep fighting.

School Hero has a nice mix of pixel art and anime-style cutscenes with colourful backgrounds. It offers fully integrated controller support through Bluetooth and USB. If you’re interested in trying it out, check the game on the Google Play Store.
