Sling your way into battle with your friends with Slingshot Braves from Colopl

I remember playing with a sling shot as a kid and shooting cans off the fence or sometimes at my best friend against my better judgement. We used to try and ricochet shots off of a tree or off another can to see which of us could knock down the most. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought of using that mechanic and putting it into a fantasy 3D RPG.

Slingshot Braves puts you in a fantasy setting where you play a hero working your way up in the world and searching for an ancient artifact to help defeat an ancient evil. It’s a fairly typical story line and the game offers the usual quests to gain experience and earn you gold and loot, as well as shops for you to spend that newly acquired gold on new equipment and items. You even have the ability to upgrade your equipment and evolve your weapons and armor into better quality items. What sets Slingshot Braves aside from other RPGs out there is the combat.

Combat is handled in a unique way in which you have to “Sling” your party members towards the enemy to attack. To attack you pull back on the character and a line appears in the direction that party member is going to shoot off or charge in. You can also ricochet off of enemy units, walls and best of all other party members. There is a layer of strategy here as well, if you sling and bounce off a party member first you gain a combo bonus to the damage you inflict. However, depending on how far they are will cause you to slow down you momentum and thus not able to hit as many enemy units, where as if you had just attacked the enemy, you might inflict less damage with the hit but hit more enemies as you ricochet off them. Also you will do more damage if you attack an enemy from behind so setting up the ricochet so you hit targets from behind can very well make a difference in a battle, but remember they do more damage that way as well to you.

Your character and the party members also have special abilities they can use once they have built up enough of a charge. Those abilities can be used to unleash everything from boulders you slinging at your enemies in rapid succession, to healing spells slung at your party members within a certain amount of time. Also other characters will attack in different ways for example a swords men might ricochet side to side for an attack or a lance-men will shoot in a straight line through a line of targets.

Slingshot Braves has a different feel and its refreshing seeing a different game mechanic being used instead of the standard menu system for combat. The game has a multiplayer component to it as well allowing you to team up with other players in real time battles and allowing you to gain rare items. The game is free to play with IAP’s and while I didn’t feel as though I had to purchase anything to keep playing they might become more relevant down the road.
