Square Enix to launch a new companion app for Thief, hitting Android on February 25th. Free version available now.

Square Enix has already made a pretty big announcement today with regards to the release of Hitman GO for Android which will be heading our way soon. The company has also announced that it will be launching a new paid version of their Thief companion app for Android users later this month.

Most companion applications have a lot of similar functions and purpose. This upcoming Thief companion app is no different either, focusing on additional fan involvement with the game in various way. Fans will be able to gain additional insight into the Thief universe through the app itself. This includes the latest news as it happens, access to all the latest trailers, artwork, exclusive screenshots and in-depth character bios and further details of the game’s storyline.

One thing a lot of newer companion apps are offering is a second-screen experience and the Thief companion app will also have this feature, allowing users to fully engage with the PC and console game upon release. There is one additional thing that this app will have that other companion apps do not – a free lite version and a paid full version.

95% of the companion apps out there are offered up for download for free while the remaining 5% are still free but are associated with services that require a subscription. You can still download those for free and use the app in a limited way without the subscription active though. The Thief companion app will be different as there will be a lite version for free (now available) that features the latest news, trailer, screenshots, bios and all that good stuff.

The paid version will have additional features including:

– Direct Link to the main game to track your in-game stats and stolen loot
– Official Wiki created in partnership with IGN
– Official interactive digital maps created by Prima
– Issues #1 and #2 of the Official Thief digital comics created by Dark Horse Comics
– Exclusive never before seen art and background content direct from the development team
– Access to official Thief merchandise

The full version of the app will be available for download if you dish out $2.99. However you can get the full version for free (among additional goodies) if you pre-order the upcoming Thief game through GameStop. The paid version of the Thief companion app will be launching on February 25h, 2014. We’ll post an update here when that one launches. The free one is available now.
