Marmalade Game Studio has released the Heart of Africa expansion for Ticket to Ride. Following the Japan expansion, it’s the second physical board map to get a digital format for the first time. The map was chosen through a community vote, making it one of the most requested additions from players.

Here’s what Heart of Africa brings to Ticket to Ride

Heart of Africa brings Terrain cards, which are linked to the routes across the map’s landscapes. If used wisely, they can double the points on a completed route.

There are three kinds of Terrain cards, each connected to certain route colours. Desert and Savanna cards apply to yellow, orange, and red routes. Jungle and Forest cards are for purple, blue, and green routes. Mountain and Cliff cards match up with white, grey, and black routes.

Claiming a short route of one to three train lengths requires just one Terrain card to trigger the bonus. For longer routes of four to six, you need two cards. The catch is that you can only use them if you hold at least as many of that type of card as any other player at the table.

And as usual, Heart of Africa brings along two new characters to Ticket to Ride. They are festival organiser Blessing Kipruto and griot Nnamdi Okpara. There are also two new vehicles, the Fahagola railbus and the Safari Sights car. Lastly, there are two new carriages, Animal Trails and Stately Travels.

Do you travel?

Heart of Africa’s map highlights central and southern Africa during the age of exploration, adventure, and missionary travel. The design focuses heavily on the diverse terrain that defines the routes.
