NetHack for Android

NetHack is a port from the old dungeon exploration game of the same name by Fredrik Franstrom. This is a rogue-like RPG game that is a step up from the old school MUD or Text based RPGs that used to be real popular. NetHack offers up a large RPG in a small file size thanks in part to the dungeon and everything in it being rendered using text symbols.

For those of you who have never played NetHack or any other rogue-like text based RPG, it is pretty much just like any other RPG with races, stats, items, enemies to kill and even pets that help out. Playing the game is pretty easy, just move your guy who is represented by a “@” on the screen using the trackball. Collect items and kill enemies to progress through the dungeon and increase your levels.

Items, doors and various other elements inside the dungeon are represented using different symbols and colors. Combat, unlocking doors and any other information or actions are presented to you at the top of the screen. You just follow the prompts and act accordingly. There are different sub-menus you can access to equip items you find or use items, check your stats and alignment or check the list of monsters you’ve killed.

Features:

  • Direct full port of the original NetHack
  • Color TTY interface
  • Both virtual and hard keyboard support

While most RPG fans won’t enjoy this due to the lack of graphics, anyone who used to play MUDs or text based RPGs will like this game a lot. NetHack is not to be confused with NetHak which is another text based RPG game available for Android but completely different in game theme and gameplay.

You can pick up NetHack for free off the Android market right now. It’s an RPG that you’ll need a lot of patience for but in the end will more then likely be happy you went and grabbed it. This game is also open source so feel free to grab the code and mess with it and make your own RPG.
