Gamefly planning to get into funding Android game developers, game publishing

Gamefly is looking to expand their business which currently has been fairly successful with the game rental end of things. However, what they are looking at in terms of expansion is to move into mobile games for both Android and iOS, starting with funding game developers.

During the Shacknews Weekend Confirmed podcast, Gamefly’s editorial director Garnett Lee said that “We’re going to be doing some pub-funding.” Further expanding on this, Garnett Lee said they want to help good games get made. So far the main goal as of right now seems to be funding but considering GameFly’s roots in the rental business, publishing of mobile games is the logical next step.

This has all come about after recent reports from many game industry analysts that question whether or not physical media (like actually buying a physical copy of a game) is dieing, being replaced with DLC, Steam-like services and other options gamers have. In order to survive the physical media downfall, if it happens, GameFly will have mobile now as well.
