The Oculus Rift Virtual headset looking at next-gen smartphone support

Well here is some rather interesting news that has been revealed through and interview between Edge Online and Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe where details trickled out about what the Oculus company is looking at when it comes to supporting other devices. One would think that the next-gen consoles would be of main interest but that isn’t the case at all.

Instead the company is much more interested in bringing support for smartphone to the Oculus Rift headset. For those of you unfamiliar with what the Oculus Rift is, essentially it is a headset that is reliving the old craze of virtual reality from back in the day but thanks to advancements in technology since then, the Oculus Rift is doing it right.

I love consoles but internally we’re a lot more excited about where mobile’s going to go, and being able to plug it right into a next gen cellphone. It’s the innovation, and how fast cellphones are now improving – where we’ll be with the next Galaxy or the next iPhone compared to where consoles are. Those things are almost doubling every year, compared to a console that’s just stuck it out for eight years – it just makes us very excited. There’s a lot of improvements that can be made on the hardware side for VR that no-one’s doing yet because it’s a new thing. The mobile rate of innovation is going to be able to make a lot of those improvements. – Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe

The inteview goes on with all kinds of other good information for those of you interested in the Oculus Rift, but this was a pretty interesting part in the interview itself. This would open up a whole slew of possibilities that we really wouldn’t have thought possible. All the tech is there for all the wireless functions between the two devices so just think of the cool set-ups people will be able to come up with for more immersive gaming.

The Oculus Rift is still slated for release sometime in 2014 for around $300.
