“In war, not everyone is a soldier.” This War Of Mine – a new game in development by 11 Bit Studios

Total immersion is the best way to describe the feeling you have when watching the one minute and twenty second video trailer for 11 Bit Studios upcoming game This War Of Mine. The stunning visuals layered with the strikingly stirring music are a prelude for what is to come.

11 Bit Studios has a successful history in the mobile game industry. Anomaly Warzone Earth, Anomaly Korea, Anomaly 2, Sleepwalkers Journey and Funky Smugglers have all been released on the Android platform and have done extremely well. This War Of Mine which is currently being developed for PCs is expected to be released later this year. If we look at the development history of their games, we can expect the game to be released on mobile platforms.

Unlike most war games, this game does not focus on the actions of the soldiers or generals, but of the civilians. It is a fresh perspective when it comes to telling the stories about cities and towns embattled by war. The ideas behind This War Of Mine are described in 11 Bit Studios development blog. While developing the game, we’ve been driven by a specific tagline: “In war, not everyone is a soldier.”

In This War Of Mine you have to make life-and-death decisions based purely on your conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them in order to prevail; there are not good or bad decisions during war. There is only survival. – Quoted from 11 Bit Studios

This sums up how we – and you – begin the experience. In This War Of Mine, the focus is shifted away from military operations portrayed in most games. Instead, it is a dark survival game where you control a group of civilians trying to stay alive in a besieged city. Your task is simple: survive. During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, offering precious time to craft, trade, upgrade your shelter, feed and cure your survivors. At night you can scavenge nearby areas in search for food, medicines, weapons and other useful items.

This War Of Mine was inspired by real-life events and delivers a message:

This can happen in your city, in your country. While designing a new game, we came across an article that described how one man survived in a besieged city. We learned about his hardships and the horror of that experience. We decided to work around this idea and make something real, something that moves people and makes them stop think for a second. It’s about time that games, just like any other art form, start talking about important things.  – 11 Bit Studios lead designer, Michal Drozdowsk

It appears 11 Bit Studios has crafted another genre bending game that is certain to take gamers on an experience that they will not forget. As we learn more about this intriguing game we will let you know. Until then, take a look at the video trailer and let us know what you think.
