Pokemon GO, Niantic’s revolutionary location-based AR Pokemon spinoff, grew its revenues by 39% to $1.92 billion in 2020.
This is despite the global COVID-19 pandemic forcing players to stay at home for much of the year, curtailing the strolls, hikes, and urban rambles that traditionally allow Trainers to find new Pokemon and engage in raid battles and other forms of social gameplay.
Niantic made several tweaks to Pokemon GO during 2020, allowing players to take part in raids remotely, access Gyms and Pokestops from farther away, use incense for longer, and so on. While some of the many changes were temporary, others have become permanent features of the game.
The moves have clearly paid off, with what could have been an existential threat to Pokemon GO proving to be the springboard to even greater success.
The moral seems to be that players will shell out more cash if you don’t make them exercise as much. Naturally, exercise is still encouraged, as long as it’s done safely.
