2022 was jam-packed with some fantastic games, so it was hard for us to decide on just that one game that would take the big trophy. While there are some brilliant contenders, we’ve ultimately chosen Vampire Survivors as our Android Game of the Year 2022.
Here’s why.
What is Vampire Survivors?
Vampire Survivors is a rogue-like gothic horror game that challenges you to the max. Hundreds of monsters descend upon you and it’s your job to fight back. While the graphics are simplistic, and the gameplay is largely automatic, that doesn’t’ stop it from being fiendishly addictive. The aim of the game is to survive as long as possible as you fend off the creatures who lunge themselves at you as the sun sets.
Similar to other rogue-like games, you can grab a selection of weapons and items as you level up, which allows you to choose how you want to play. If you haven’t played a rogue-like game before, it’s important to remember that it’s okay to die. That may sound counterintuitive, but trust us. Each time you die you can buy a variety of upgrades with gold for the next run.
The Aim of the Game
The longer you survive, the more time you have to explore each stage. During a run, you can pick up experience gems, health items, and other useful stuff, These items ramp up the incentive to survive as long as possible.
There’s a time limit of 15 or 30 minutes for a run, and the goal is to reach this time limit without dying. If you do manage to survive until the time limit, all monsters will disappear, and Death will spawn. Death is the strongest enemy in the game, and he’s pretty tough to beat! Every minute that follows the first Death spawn will, unfortunately, spawn an additional Death.
Why is it the Android Game of the Year 2022?
We chose Vampire Survivors as the Android Game of the Year 2022 because of its intense fast-paced combat. The overall aesthetic of the game is also a bonus, with the pixelated gothic art style bringing an old school charm to the game. It’s a challenging game, but it’s a great adrenaline rush, and can be pretty difficult at first with low-level weapons and no power-ups, but you’ll soon be on your way to crushing every monster in your path.
