The Best Android Games of 2021 – The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker

Sure, a fancy-schmancy AR-based Witcher game launched on the Play Store this year, but Thronebreaker makes far better use of the license. It’s a single player RPG built around the mechanics of Gwent, and it’s ruddy brilliant.

While the card-playing mechanics are pretty darn slick, it’s the story that’s the main draw here. There are invasions, conspiracies and full blown conflicts, and a cast of memorable characters too.

This isn’t some half-assed cash-in, there’s a real meat to the experience and it’ll draw you in within the hour. Then you’re pretty much stuck with it until you get to the bitter end.

While the gameplay here isn’t the most sophisticated, there are enough twists and tweaks to the Gwent mechanics to make sure you remain interested, even without another real opponent on the other side of the table.

Thronebreaker shows what a smart developer can do with disparate elements, and it crafts a single player RPG experience that’s pretty much impossible to put down.

Click here to download The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker from the Play Store. The first part is free, and there’s an IAP to unlock the rest.
