When Fractal Space launched in 2019 it joined Portal, the Talos Principle, The Room, and a select few others in an elite circle of universally acclaimed first-person puzzlers.
Like those games, Fractal Space is a slick, atmospheric environmental puzzler that ironically takes place in an environment without an atmosphere: deep space.
You’re playing as a castaway on a mysterious space station, attempting to escape by working with the objects and clues around you—all while getting to know a disembodied voice called I.G.
As you progress through the campaign you gradually uncover the secret of how you found yourself marooned in space. At the same time, it becomes increasingly obvious that I.G. doesn’t necessarily have your best interests at heart.
In gameplay terms, Fractal Space gives you a number of different ways to use your environment for puzzle-solving.
At first, it keeps things relatively simple, for example by giving you switches to flick and cubes to stand on so that you can reach previously inaccessible areas.
But pretty soon you’ll find yourself using mirrors to direct light, leaping through portals, scouring your surroundings for codes, and so on.
There’s action, too. Between solving puzzles you’ll shoot stuff with your taser, fly around with your jetpack, dodge saws, evade crushers, and generally carry on like Boba Fett.
Fractal Space is available as a free game, but it’s well worth paying the modest price of the proper HD version.
For significantly less than the price of a takeout coffee you’ll get five exclusive Legendary Colors for your taser, 4K, 120 FPS, 120 Hz, dynamic lighting, particle effects, and support for Google TV.
Plus, Fractal Space HD is on Google Play Pass, so there’s a distinct possibility that you already have access to that version.
Both versions of Fractal Space, meanwhile, come with a Speedrun Mode, customizable field of view, leaderboards, achievements, universal gamepad support, and cross-save.
