Crunchyroll has opened pre-registration for CATO: Buttered Cat on mobile. If you remember, we covered the news of the game’s announcement last year. It was released on Steam for PC in September 2024. A cute cats & puzzles galore!

CATO: Buttered Cat is a puzzle platformer

The game is based on the buttered-cat paradox meme. It’s the thought experiment where cats always land on their feet, and toast always lands buttered side down. So, strapping the two together supposedly results in a never-ending spinning machine.

Cato, the word, is derived from the words cat and toast. So, the game also deals with the oddly logical teamwork between Cat and Buttered Toast.

To play the game, you use your different abilities and solve puzzles across a wide variety of environments. Cat can run, slip through pipes, climb scratching boards, and even act like liquid to fit through tight spaces.

Meanwhile, Toast jumps like a projectile, with longer presses giving it more distance. When the two combine, the paradox kicks in, opening up paths to otherwise unreachable spots.

The full game offers over 140 main levels, more than 60 side levels, and 200+ handcrafted puzzles. There are hidden rooms and secret passages as well. Some of the secrets even hide Easter eggs from other worlds or drop items you can bring back to your hideout.

Five unique mini-games are also part of CATO. The worlds here come with plenty of variety, featuring contraptions like buttered trampolines, space pipes that boost speed, and mysterious companions.

The game also introduces boss fights and enemies that add a touch of action to the mostly puzzle-based design. You can also unlock a large number of cosmetic options, with more than 50 skins for Cat and Toast.

Pre-register Now!

If you’re a Crunchyroll member, you can pre-register for the game on the Google Play Store. It’s Team Woll’s first game, and they originally created the concept during the BOOOM Gamejam in 2022. Watch the gameplay trailer here to get a glimpse of the game.
