Codename: “Molehill” APIs: Flash 3D accelerated graphics

A new set of APIs will be available very soon from Adobe, Codenamed: “Molehill” for developers to use in their Flash game development. These are low-level, GPU accelerated 3D APIs which will allow developers to make much more detailed and faster rendering 3D graphics for the upcoming Flash Player update. Officially this is awesome news.

Currently the Flash Player now available (version 10.1) can render thousands of non z-buffered triangles at approx. 30Hz but with these new 3D APIs the upcoming Flash Player will be able to render “hundreds of thousands” of z-buffered triangles, in HD resolution and in full screen.

Developers will be able to use these APIs with most of the popular ActionScript 3D frameworks such as Sophie 3D or Alternativa3D. This will suppoer True DirectX and Open GL ES 2.0. Technical babbling aside this is great news because we should be able to start seeing some pretty fantastic Flash-based games on our Android devices thanks to AIR and Flash Player for Android.
